Eton Leaver's & Portraits

A Short History of Eton Leavers 

The tradition of “Eton Leavers’ Portraits” at Eton started in the 17th Century by headmaster Dr. Barnard (1754 - 1765) who asked his most prominent students to leave a portrait of themselves instead of the usual Leaver’s gift which at the time was somewhere between £10 and £15. As the years passed by, the corridors and grand rooms of the college must have become covered with portraits; so much so that the tradition soon started to die down, purely due to a lack of space.

In 2008 however, Rhubarb & Custard decided to make every effort to fully revive the tradition, but with a modern twist. We now offer parents and boys the service of taking a series of portraits of boys in their last year around and about the College grounds, with a final Leaver’s Photo Album or Photo-book being a popular choice of presentation for parents.

Following the photoshoot, we can create a set of Leaver's Cards (left) (available in multiples of 25) for leaving with friends and beaks. There is a huge range of other ways you can enjoy the photos, includiong prints, framed collages (right) and photo books.

My goodness Hannah these are all gorgeous.  I am looking through them now and definitely want to purchase some but it's a hard choice.  How soon could the printed framed photo’s be ready?  Just conscious they break up on 14th and these would be Christmas presents.
I will also want a digital one for Christmas Card of which we are trying to decide which one.

Each year we are asked to take formal group shots for all aspects of Eton College Life. We are available for 

  • Eton College Photography
  • Formal Yearly House Photos
  • Teams for both minor and major sports
  • Summer Schools
  • and various other groups including
    • POP - Eton Society
    • Sixth Form Select
    • CCF Officers
    • Societies
    • Tour Groups (eg Yearly Choir Tours, Rugby Tours etc)
    • F-Block Entry Groups by House
    • Leavers B Block Groups by House

We are also available for all types of Group shots. If you require a formal photo of your team, group or house, please get in touch and we can talk through the details and arrange a date. 

We have a very flexible diary so we can easily fit a photo shoot into the school timetable. Furthermore, we can change dates and times at a moments notice if weather or anything else requires it,  and are available at any time during the working day (Tuesdays to Saturdays inclusive - please note - we are Closed on Sundays & Mondays). Eton College Photography.
